Herdy—the gift, homeware, and accessories brand inspired by the Lake District’s lovable Herdwick sheep—have announced a “Hunt The Herdy” event to take place on “Random Acts Of Kindness Day”, Sunday 17th February. 30 “Little Herdy” soft toys will be individually dressed as “Super Herdys” and hidden all over Cumbria for the public to find and take home.
“Last year’s event went down a storm so we’re looking forward to inspiring even more great acts of kindness this year,” said Diane Hannah, co-founder of The Herdy Company. “We were astonished by the reaction last year; we thought it would be a fun way to do something nice that got people out enjoying Cumbria and spreading some kindness, we certainly didn’t expect quite so many people to get involved! For us that’s what it’s all about, spreading smiles and happiness and, given the surprise success of last year, we’ve pulled out all the stops to make this year even more special”.
The event follows on from the success of their first “Hunt The Herdy” event, which took place in 2018 on “Random Acts of Kindness Day”, where “Little Herdy” soft toys and “Herdy Love Ewe” ceramics were hidden in places such as the summit of Helvellyn, Kendal Castle, Whitehaven’s The Rum Story, and Ulverston’s Hoad Monument. Members of the public who found a hidden Herdy were encouraged to report back to Herdy’s Twitter or Facebook and then carry out their own Random Act of Kindness.
“On Saturday (17th February 2018) we set off first thing, to be the first to the top of Helvellyn,” said Kris Moeckel, from Silverdale, who was in the Lake District at the time with his then-girlfriend Ishbel. “Upon arrival at the summit we found a Herdy Love Ewe attached to the trig pillar. We then moved to the ‘shelter’ for a cup of tea, at which point I proposed to Ishbel and she said yes.
“Finding the ‘Love Ewe’ and reading the message about random acts of kindness inspired us to perform our own random act of kindness. So, while the ring was being re-sized we bought lunch and a hot chocolate for a local homeless gentleman.”
The “Hunt The Herdy” event is due to take place on Sunday 17th February 2019, launching at 9am. Many organisations are on board to support the effort including Windermere Lake Cruises, Honister Slate Mine, and Booths. As well as the organisations helping to hide the Herdys, volunteer members of the public and the Herdy team will be setting their alarm clocks early in preparation for their the secret hiding mission! There will be a blog post on Herdy’s website complete with a map showing the general locations of the Super Herdys along with corresponding clues as to where they can be found. The Herdy Company will also have a giant 3ft-tall “Super Herdy” stationed outside their Keswick shop.
