A Carlisle firm has been awarded a £55 million three-year contract to resurface roads in Cumberland.
DSD Construction Limited has won the work with Cumberland Council.
Under the framework agreement, valued at up to £55 million for three years, the council will allocate at least £9.5 million for the first year work including road resurfacing, installation of new road markings, upgrading ironworks, pothole repairs and routine maintenance.
As part of the contract, DSD Construction Limited will provide training to the council’s highway’s team. The authority said the strategic investment aimed to empower the Cumberland team to handle a wider range of infrastructure projects in-house, sustaining overall efficiency.
Leader of Cumberland Council Mark Fryer said: “This is excellent news for both the council and DSD Construction Limited. By engaging local talent, we are ensuring that the investment remains within our community. Our commitment to retaining resources locally, as outlined in our Council Plan, is reinforced by awarding up to £55 million to a local company.”
Cumberland Councillor Denise Rollo, executive member for sustainable, resilient and connected places, said: “I am delighted that we have chosen a local firm for this contract, aligning with Cumberland Council’s objectives.
“Prioritising local businesses not only supports our economy and job market but also contributes to sustainability efforts, ensuring the well-being of our community while enhancing our road infrastructure.”
Martin Tweddle, operations director of DSD Construction Limited, said: “We are extremely proud to have been selected by Cumberland Council to deliver the resurfacing framework over the next three years.
“As one of the largest SME employers in the region, it’s fantastic to see Cumberland Council investing so heavily in the local economy whilst securing and enhancing local employment and supply chain opportunities.
“This award provides the continuity of work needed to invest in our people as well as giving back to our local communities through various social value commitments.”
