A Kendal-based business selling wool fabric from Lake District sheep has launched a campaign to put their Cumbrian products on the map.

Cable and Blake hope to build a brand around their Herdwick wool fabric and help Cumbrian hill farmers to generate income from their flock’s fleeces.

The firm design and sell 100 per cent wool fabric woven from yarn spun from the fleeces of the iconic Herdwick sheep.

Cable and Blake source their fleeces through the British Wool Board from Cumbrian farms, and recently gained a British Wool license, recognising their commitment to 100% Lake District wool.

The firm has launched a Kickstarter campaign to produce a new range of five woollen throws inspired by different parts of the Lake District.

Rachel Cabble, creative director of Cabble and Bell, said: “This is a new creative endeavour that will produce throws inspired by Dobgill Crag, Dove Crag, Thornhow Crag, Durple Ghyll, and Honister Yew Crag.

“Our business is all about sustaining rural communities and celebrating specialist skills. From the Herdwick farmers to the spinners, and from the weavers to the 21 local businesses using our fabrics and selling their products through our Kendal-based shop, there are traditions and skills that deserve wider recognition.

“It’s an ambitious plan but we are proud to be part of a thriving rural and creative economy and we’re ready to shout about the amazing Lake District landscape and these throws that are inspired by it.”

The firm’s fabric already features in local interiors such as bedrooms at Cartmel’s L’Enclume hotel and Rachel hopes the new product range will help raise the profile of wool from the Lake District.
