A Cumbrian construction firm has been shortlisted for a prestigious national award.

William King Construction has been nominated in the National Federation of Builders’ 2026 Construction Awards of Excellence.

The firm, which has recently opened new offices at Westlakes Science Park, near Whitehaven, is one of five finalists in the Best Building Contractor (up to £10 million turnover) category.

William King, director, said: “To be recognised as a finalist at a national level is a proud moment for everyone at William King Construction.

“We were fortunate to receive awards for individual projects in 2016 and 2019, but this nomination feels particularly special because it recognises the business as a whole and the people behind it.

“It’s a reflection of the hard work, professionalism and commitment shown by our team over many years, and we’re incredibly proud to see that recognised.”

Shawn Ackerlay, director, added: “This recognition reflects the dedication of our people, who consistently deliver projects safely, efficiently, and to the highest standards.

“By fostering a strong team and a culture focused on continuous improvement, we have built a business capable of sustained success.

“It is an honour to see those efforts recognised nationally, and we look forward to building on this achievement as we pursue future opportunities.”

The company works across residential, commercial and nuclear sectors.

It has recently joined Cumberland Council Capital Works Framework, a four-year approved contractor list for the authority.

It gives William King Construction the chance to bid for contracts worth up to £3m and the authority access to trusted local contractors.

William King Construction also continues to play a key role in supporting major projects through the Programme and Project Partners framework at Sellafield.

Its Aspire Academy, a community interest company, provides practical skills training and opportunities for young people who may otherwise face barriers to employment.

The Construction Awards of Excellence recognise exceptional performance by businesses, projects and individuals.

Open to construction and building companies throughout the UK, the awards are judged independently by industry specialists.

The winners will be announced at a ceremony in Birmingham in November.

Richard Beresford, chief executive of the National Federation of Builders, said: “The Construction Awards of Excellence shine a spotlight on the remarkable standards being achieved across our industry.

“We are proud to recognise those companies, projects and individuals that demonstrate excellence, innovation and a commitment to delivering outstanding results.

“Congratulations to all those who have been shortlisted, and we look forward to celebrating with the industry later this year.”

  • Also in the awards, Electriko Electrical Services has been shortlisted in the Remarkable Restoration and Renovation Project category for its work on Kirkby Stephen Parish Church.
