A Lake District country inn has been sold to a local hospitality entrepreneur after it was on the market for £1.85 million.

The Punch Bowl Inn and Restaurant, in Crosthwaite, near Kendal, has been bought by Adam Chapman.

It was sold by the Rose family, who had owned and operated the business for more than 20 years.

Dating back to 1829, the property is in the Lyth Valley. It has a restaurant, bar and nine bedrooms, and holds accolades including AA Inn of the Year and Michelin Guide Pub of the Year.

The transaction was handled by Julian Troup, of Colliers, with Kerry Southworth, of Harrison Drury, acting for the vendor.

Former owner Richard Rose said: “The Punch Bowl has been much more than a business to us; it has been our passion for over 20 years.

“We are incredibly proud of everything our team has achieved and of the reputation the inn has earned both locally and nationally.

“We feel the time is right to pass the business on, and we’re delighted to see it remain in the hands of someone who shares our commitment to quality hospitality.”

Mr Chapman said: “I’ve been coming to The Punch Bowl for more than 20 years, and it has always been my favourite place to eat.

“To now have the opportunity to own such a special business is a real privilege.

“Richard and the team have created something exceptional, and our focus will be on preserving everything that guests know and love while continuing to build on its outstanding reputation for many years to come.”

Mr Troup, director of hotels and licensed leisure at Colliers, added: “The Punch Bowl is one of the North West’s most recognised destination inns, and there was significant interest from buyers across the UK.

“We are delighted to have completed the sale to an experienced hospitality operator who is well placed to build on the business’s outstanding reputation.”
