Navigating the rising tide: the challenge of sustainability in hospitality

Cumbrian business coach Antony Penny on the challenge for sustainability in the hospitality sector.

As the hospitality industry grapples with the ever-increasing costs of operating, a pressing question looms large: is it really sustainable?

The recent surge in the national living wage has sent shockwaves through the sector, pushing wage bills perilously close to the 50% mark and squeezing profit margins to breaking point.

In the face of mounting challenges, from soaring utility and food costs to escalating overheads, businesses are left scrambling to find a solution that won’t compromise their bottom line.

But as costs continue to rise, the prospect of passing them on to the customer raises another concern: how much is too much? Will patrons balk at the sight of a £75 steak, signalling the demise of value-driven dining experiences?

Moreover, the ripple effects of wage-driven inflation extend far beyond the realm of customer pricing. With businesses under increasing pressure to cut costs and maximise efficiency, the burden falls squarely on the shoulders of existing staff.

But as teams are stretched thin, will service standards suffer, creating a vicious cycle of declining quality and customer satisfaction?

Additionally, the impact of these challenges goes beyond the realm of frontline service. As EBITDA margins erode, hospitality becomes a less attractive prospect for investors, resulting in decreased employment opportunities and diminished tax revenues for the government.

Amidst this landscape, the industry must embrace creativity and innovation to chart a path forward.

Perhaps it’s time to rethink traditional business models, should we explore changing our approach to labour-intensive aspects such as food and beverage or spa treatments. By diversifying revenue streams and streamlining operations, businesses can adapt to the changing landscape while preserving their core values and commitment to exceptional guest experiences.

In the end, sustainability in hospitality isn’t just about weathering the storm – it’s about thriving in the face of adversity and emerging stronger on the other side.

Only by embracing change and fostering resilience can the industry navigate the challenges ahead and continue to flourish in an ever-evolving landscape.
