Mental health challenges cost UK businesses an estimated £45 billion annually, yet for family businesses, where personal and professional lives intertwine, the stakes are uniquely high.

Recognising this, The Family Business Community, in collaboration with Talk Works and Marsh, is hosting a ground-breaking event: “The Power of Vulnerability: Owning Your Mental Health.”

Taking place on November 25 at the People First Centre in Carlisle, the free event aims to spark meaningful conversations about mental health in the family business sector. It will provide leaders with practical tools to address mental well-being within their organisations, setting an example for businesses across the UK.

A call to action for family businesses

Family businesses make up 88% of UK private sector businesses, employing millions.

While known for their resilience, these organisations often face unique mental health pressures, balancing commercial challenges with familial relationships. This event seeks to break the stigma and provide actionable solutions.

What to expect

The event will feature a mix of personal stories, expert advice, and practical guidance, with discussions on:

  • Legal responsibilities of employers around mental health.
  • How to implement mental health strategies in the workplace.
  • Creating a culture of openness and support.

The agenda also includes networking opportunities for family business leaders to share insights and experiences in a supportive environment.

Attendees will hear from business leaders and mental health specialists, including:

  • Claire Story – Story Decorating Group
  • Karen Stalker – Stalkers Transport Services Ltd
  • Kerrie Spurr – Lake District Estates
  • Sue Kaveney – Hunter HR

Expert contributors include:

  • Jennifer Cottam – co-founder, Talk Works
  • Andy Wealthall – COO, Lifetime FM
  • Helen Wilkinson – Managing director, Talk Works
  • Lorna Feeney – Mental health & practice lead, Marsh

The Family Business Community said it was leading the charge on mental health, providing tools and opportunities to create healthier workplaces. This event is part of their ongoing commitment to championing issues that matter most to family businesses.

The event takes place from 9.30am to noon, The event is free, but spaces are limited. Register now at https://fambizcommunity.com/
