BARROW Borough Council has launched a final appeal to businesses affected by the Coronavirus pandemic to apply for two government grants before the final deadline.

So far the council has distributed £11.3 million to 1,001 businesses through the Small Business Rate Relief and Rural Rate Relief scheme.

Within days of the grants being launched more than 500 Barrow firms applied for the scheme.

Now those who have still yet to apply for the funding have until the closing date of August 28.

Councillor Ann Thomson, Barrow Borough Council leader, said: “It’s brilliant to see how much funding has been transferred to so many businesses who are in desperate need of it during this incredibly difficult time.

“But I must encourage those who haven’t applied yet to do so before the deadline closes, this is our final call. Please provide all the information needed so the process is as quick and as smooth as possible.”

There are two streams of government funding available to help businesses affected by COVID-19.

Small businesses which already receive Small Business Rate Relief or Rural Rate Relief can apply for a one off grant of £10,000 to help with ongoing business costs.

Businesses operating in the hospitality, leisure or retail sector can apply for a one off cash grant of £25,000 if they have a rateable value of between £15,000 and £51,000.

Businesses can send their information on downloadable data collection forms available online at Barrowbc.gov.uk via the Covid-19 Info page.

Alternatively, forms can also be printed out, completed, and posted to: Business Support Grant, Barrow Borough Council, Town Hall, Duke Street, Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria, LA14 2LD.

The deadline is at midnight on August 28.
