Cumbrian horse owners can hear first-hand from one of the country’s leading authorities on equine skin cancer, at a virtual meeting.

It is the first event held online by Paragon Veterinary Group’s equine department which regularly attracts audiences of more than 100 to its usual face-to-face educational evenings.

Guest speaker is Prof Derek Knottenbelt OBE an internationally renowned expert on equine internal medicine and specialist on the topic of the evening – sarcoids and wound healing.

Guests will be able to listen to him speak and ask questions.

Euan Hammersley, Paragon Veterinary Group equine vet.

“We are really pleased to be able to announce this event, it’s the first one we have done virtually,” said Euan Hammersley, who is one of the three dedicated equine vets based at Paragon.

It takes place on October 22 and is the first in a series of three virtual educational evenings featuring high-profile speakers.

“We were going to host an evening in the spring but it was right as the pandemic started,” said Euan.

“It’s great to be getting back on track with a virtual version. The pandemic has disrupted life in lots of ways but we very much value keeping in touch with our clients and this will bring horse owners together – at least online.

“We are committed to sharing the latest veterinary knowledge and expertise with the Cumbrian equine community. In the UK, Derek is probably the best expert on this subject, and he travels all over the world giving lectures on it. At Paragon, we use Derek for advice when treating challenging sarcoid cases.”

The event is being organised by XLVets, a coalition of independent practices around the UK of which Paragon is a founding member.

Guests will be able to meet and catch up with the equine team from Paragon in a Zoom break-out room, before joining the main talk and Q&A.

Paragon Veterinary Group has centres in Dalston and Wetheral, with the equine department at its Newbiggin centre.

‘Sarcoids and Wound Healing’ with Derek Knottenbelt takes place at 7.30pm on Thursday October 22. It is free to attend. To register go to the Paragon Equine Facebook page and follow the link to register or contact the practice on 017684 83789.

Equine surgery specialist Jessica Kidd will be speaking on sports horse injuries on November 18 and Dave Rendle on ‘tackling obesity’ in January.
