Kendal gin company quadruples production for national club

A Kendal-based drinks company quadrupled its annual production to feature in the UK’s biggest subscription club for gin lovers.

Pennington’s Spirits and Liqueurs, based in Tanner’s Yard, worked hard during the lockdowns of 2020 to ensure that tens of thousands of bottles of the exclusive Lakeland Moon Snowfell Gin and miniatures of one of their specialist liqueurs were distributed in January’s subscription box.

They were two of the products included in a box sent out to subscribers to the Dragons’ Den-backed Craft Gin Club, which now has more than 120,000 members throughout the UK.

Members are sent a miniature bottle of gin in its Gin of the Month box, which also includes paired mixers, snacks, and a 68-page club magazine.

In January, the featured gin was the exclusive 70 cl bottle of Pennington’s Lakeland Moon Snowfell Gin.

“We first made contact with the Craft Gin Club couple of years ago,” said Mike.

“They said they loved our gin, the branding and our unique approach to drinks, especially the liqueurs and after a couple of years of working out the finer details we set about creating Snowfell Gin at the start of 2020.

“Having committed to supplying them for their January 2021 subscription boxes, it was all hands to the pumps to ensure delivery.

“At their request, we devised an exclusive recipe that would be fitting for the time of year that this was intended to be drunk and in keeping with our ties to the Lake District.”

Mike runs Pennington’s with his partner Annie Brownhill and her son Tim.

Pennington’s Spirits and Liqueurs grew out of Mike’s development of Kendal Mint Cake Liqueur, which he invented when running Burgundy’s Wine Bar in Lowther Street.

In 2015 he launched the spirits company with Annie and sold the wine bar.

Mike said: “Creating Snowfell Gin for the Craft Gin club has been the latest exciting addition to the Pennington’s spirits story.

“Our next exciting chapter is coming soon.”
