[T]he British Farming Awards category, Against the Odds, celebrates the achievements of those farmers doing something different in agriculture.

Husband and wife team David and Bekka Corrie-Close are not from a farming background.

Their passion for improving nature in the great British countryside, led them into a career in agriculture.

The Horned Beef Company’s herd of native cattle and “Farming with Nature” ethos, is attracting a lot of attention from the public and the media.

BBC Countryfile filmed the young couple earlier this month. Adam Henson was keen to tell the story of how David and Bekka currently operate their business without a traditional farmstead.

Bekka Corrie-Close said: “We hope that telling our story will inspire others to follow, no matter how challenging.”

The Countryfile episode will broadcast on 1 October and will feature David and Bekka looking after their animals in “farming’s forgotten places”.

David Corrie-Close said: “It’s important that we reach out to new customers to buy our beef. It’s about more than that though. We need the public to support what we, and others, are doing to promote positive changes in farming.”

The British Farming Awards ceremony will take place on 19 October 2017 at the National Conference Centre in Birmingham. David and Bekka’s business, The Horned Beef Company, is one of five finalists for the award. The BBC will cover the awards in a programme to be shown in January 2018.

The Horned Beef Company Ltd was incorporated in 2015. It is run from its base in Lindale, near Grange-over-Sands in South Cumbria.
