[L]owther Castle, one of the most striking visitor attractions in the UK, is launching itself into the group travel market with special group offers and a series of garden talks.
For groups of 10 plus, Lowther offers a discount on garden entry and free entry for the organiser/coach driver. In its premium package, guests can enjoy hot drinks and biscuits upon arrival, an introductory historical talk and café voucher for the driver.
For the green-fingered, Head Gardener Martin Ogle has announced a series of garden talks – these will start on 15th February with a look at the gardens’ exuberant display of snowdrops. These monthly tours last approximately an hour and a half and feature a different theme depending on the season.
Lowther Castle was built at the turn of the 19th century and in its heyday, played host to kings, queens and the Kaiser. Wordsworth and Turner were among the artists associated with the place and a fabulous art collection graced the castle’s interior.
In 1936, however, following years of extravagance by the incumbent ‘Yellow Earl’, the house was closed for good; and in 1957, it was partly demolished, then abandoned. Today, ruins and gardens are open to the public, the ruins planted, the gardens brought back from wilderness.
An adventure playground awaits the young and brave, while culture (or horticulture) enthusiasts can wander the grounds, enjoying layers of design old and new. An exhibition tells the Story of Lowther, the café sells delicious freshly made food, the shop offers a range of goodies bespoke and otherwise.
