The MP for Copeland is urging shoppers to support their local businesses following the reopening of many shops this week.
On Monday, the Business Secretary announced that all non-essential shops could now reopen thanks to continuing progress in meeting the Government’s five tests.
High street retailers and department stores, including book shops, electronics retailers, tailors, auction houses, photography studios, indoor markets, and shops selling clothes, shoes and toys, have this week opened their doors again provided they follow the COVID-19 secure guidelines set out by the government in May.
Businesses have been asked to display a downloadable notice to inform customers and staff they have followed COVID-secure guidance.
Commenting, Trudy said: “As we move through the second stage of our roadmap to recovery, it is time to kick-start the engine of our economy while continuing to provide flexible support to those who need it.
“Following many discussions with shop owners across Copeland, I understand that Government support has been vital help to business and retaining staff.
“It is incredibly welcome new that shops are now all able to open across Copeland and they’ll need us all to lend our support by shopping local to help them get back to business.”
Trudy added that many people have worked hard to get their shops open safely this week across Copeland, adding that It has been the most challenging time for retail, and the reopening of shops is an essential step to starting the road to recovery for local business.
She said the Government’s top priority has always been to support people, protect jobs and businesses through this crisis, and the furlough and self-employment schemes have been a lifeline for many.
Grants issued by Copeland and Allerdale have helped many businesses but now more than ever our local shops will need the help of customers who can be reassured shop owners have done everything possible to keep customers and staff safe.
Chancellor of the Exchequer, Rishi Sunak, said: “Our economic response to coronavirus was designed to keep people in work, protect people’s incomes, and support businesses. These measures have been on a scale unmatched by any government in recent history. All to give us the best chance of recovering quickly as the economy reopens.
“Now, our energies are focused on getting people back to work safely, growing the economy and ensuring people can thrive in the new post-Covid world.”
All shops that have opened this week across Copeland look forward to seeing customers new and old, and they’ll need us all to give our support by shopping local, added the Copeland MP.
