One of the UK’s most historic pleasure ‘steamers’ has had a mini makeover, to help passengers returning to the Lake District after lockdown enjoy a greener, sleeker visitor experience.

First launched in 1889, MY Raven is Ullswater Steamers’ largest boat and has been part of the fleet for more than 130 years; she was even made into a temporary royal yacht when the German Emperor Wilhelm II visited the Lake District more than a century ago.

To help give people a more environmentally friendly 21st century experience, Raven has just had two new fuel-saving engines, which could potentially reduce her fuel consumption by almost 4000 litres per year.

As well as producing less emissions, the engines are significantly quieter than their predecessors. An 80% reduction in noise, together with a virtually elimination of smoke, will enhance the whole boating experience for everyone who travels on this historic vessel.

These latest measures are just the latest part of Ullswater ‘Steamers’ ongoing activities to enhance sustainable tourism, with the attraction previously winning a string of green accreditations, such as international recognition in the World Tourism Responsible Tourism Awards.

Rachel Bell, Head of Marketing & Development at Ullswater ‘Steamers’, says, “Maintaining the fragile beauty of our landscape is a top priority for us, and Raven’s latest mini-refit is another way of staying true to our ethos of working towards a zero net carbon future as a sustainable, green business.

“These latest measures cut down on emissions and have the added benefit of creating a quieter passenger experience for people to enjoy the tranquillity of the lake. We are proud to be involved in a huge range of environmental -friendly initiatives and are absolutely committed to maintain this landscape not just for the present, for the long-term future.”

Raven’s greener makeover comes as Ullswater Steamers’ winter timetable is set to restart from Thursday 3 December onwards, with tickets currently available to pre-purchase online.
