New brewery opens in Kendal

An independent brewery has set up a new home in Kendal.

Gan Yam Brew Co was set up by schoolfriends Christopher Gibbons, Christopher Talbot, Jonathan Le Mare, Jonathan Rigg, Nicolas Graves, William Burgess and William Wilkinson in 2017.

They started brewing together in London, but said their plan was always to set up in their home town.

It has now moved to the Shap Road Industrial Estate.

They said: “We’re excited to start brewing some great beer in Kendal and hopefully make a load of new friends along the way.

“When we started brewing together almost 5 years ago one of the first things we knew was that, if we ever got this far, we would want the brewery to be in Kendal.

“It feels a bit surreal that it’s actually happening.”

Chris and Jonathan are the two members of the brewery working full time on site.

They said: “Setting up a brewery in Kendal had always felt like a pipe dream, but never very realistic.

“A few things aligned last year and it suddenly made sense. You have to take these opportunities when they come up.

“We had a lot of fun growing up in Kendal in the pubs and bars in town.

“Hopefully we can now be part of a really exciting scene for lots of other Kendalians and visitors.”

All the design, from the logo through to the artwork, has been developed alongside award-winning design studio DR.ME, whose founders also grew up in Kendal.
