An innovative technology developed in Cumbria which could slash the costs of water treatment worldwide has been shortlisted for two major awards.

The system, developed by Penrith firm Typhon, is one of the first systems in the world capable of using UV from LEDs to neutralise harmful micro organisms on an industrial scale.

Other LED UV treatment systems are only effective at treating small amounts of water for very low flows or personal use.

Typhon is hoping to market the product worldwide as a unique, cost-effective, low maintenance UV water treatment, which could eventually render traditional lamps, based on mercury, obsolete

The ultraviolet LED system has been tested and developed with United Utilities and the world’s first UV LED disinfection system at Carlisle is due to be fully operational by the summer.

Typhon and United Utilities have been named joint finalists in two prestigious competitions.

This Thursday, they are in the running for the Drinking Water Initiative of the Year in the Water Industry Awards and the Institute of Water’s National Innovation Award later this year.

Typhon’s chief operations officer Matt Simpson said: “This is a hugely important leap for UV technology in the water industry and it’s great that our combined efforts over the last three years are being acknowledged with nominations in two such important awards.

“Typhon has grown to 15 employees at Newtongate and we’re hopeful that our success will also be a huge success for Penrith.”
