Tesco is closing deli and hot food counters in 317 of its stores.

The supermarket chain has not revealed where the counters will be axed, but said it was part of its plan to serve its customers in the best way possible.

The firm, which has superstores in Workington, Whitehaven, Carlisle and Millom, plus Express outlets across the county, has not revealed where the counters the close.

It said as it had responded to the challenges of COVID-19, its business had changed faster than at any point in its history.

It added that customer shopping behaviour has changed considerably over recent years which has led to a decrease in the number of customers using counters on a regular basis.

A statement said: “In 279 stores where we see local customer demand for meat, fish or hot deli counters, we will continue to offer these counter services.

“However, in 317 stores where we see the lowest demand, we will close these counters and repurpose the space to better reflect our customers’ needs.”

There will be no redundancies related to the change, it added, as those affected will be offered alternative roles.
