A Cumbrian limestone quarry is set to be extended as its owners reveal plans to ‘safeguard its future for a generation’.
Moota Quarry was first used in 1949 and Breedon, a construction materials group, has revealed plans to extend its life.
Existing planning permission is due to expire in December 2024 and Breedon wants to extend the quarry to the south-west to secure the quarry’s future for the next 20 years.
The development, if approved, will provide four million tonnes of high-quality limestone which will be sold within the local and regional markets, the company said.
It said: “The proposed extension will secure a significant supply of high-quality limestone to meet the region’s growing demand for construction materials as well as local jobs at the quarry and within the local supply chain.”
The plans for the site also include the continued restoration of the quarry’s most northern point.

We are also committed to working closely with the local community, to ensure transparency and understanding of our operations. As such, we are currently consulting on the plans for the site, and we encourage everyone to get involved.”
Breedon will be running a public consultation on the plans for two weeks, until Wednesday July 19.
Breedon has launched a project website at www.mootaquarry.co.uk to provide information about the proposed extension and restoration, as well as give an opportunity for the community to engage and provide feedback.
