A Cumbrian social impact property development company has been awarded an important workplace accreditation.

BEC has been awarded the Menopause Friendly Accreditation.

BEC, based at Westlakes Science Park in Moor Row, near Whitehaven, was granted by Henpicked: Menopause In The Workplace, is the only industry-recognised standard for menopause support in the workplace and is awarded to employers who demonstrate clear, effective practices and a genuine commitment to wellbeing.

Michael Pemberton, chief executive of BEC, said: “I’m incredibly proud that we have achieved the Menopause Friendly Accreditation. It reflects the dedication and tenacity of our team and underlines our deep-rooted belief that we have a responsibility to support our people.

“We want to create a culture where menopause can be talked about openly and without stigma, not just for the benefit of our colleagues but also for the communities we serve. This accreditation is a testament to our ongoing commitment to inclusion, wellbeing and people-first values.”

BEC undertook a comprehensive assessment process carried out by an independent panel, submitting evidence of best practice across five key areas: culture, policies and practices, training, engagement, and the physical working environment.

Central to BEC’s success was a willingness to open conversations across the organisation – including with younger team members and men – to raise awareness and foster understanding of how menopause can affect colleagues and loved ones.

By listening carefully to feedback, BEC tailored its workplace adjustments and provided clear signposting to expert advice and support.

Elaine White, finance officer and menopause champion at BEC, added: “It’s heart-warming to celebrate this achievement. Leading on this initiative has been a privilege, and I’m so grateful for the support I’ve received throughout.

“This recognition reflects a real team effort and a shared commitment to building a supportive and inclusive workplace where everyone feels seen and understood. Normalising the menopause conversation is essential, and I’m proud we’re doing just that.”

Deborah Garlick, CEO and founder of Henpicked: Menopause In The Workplace, added: “BEC’s commitment to supporting its people is deeply impressive. By starting conversations, listening to colleagues’ views, and making meaningful adjustments, BEC has created a menopause-friendly workplace grounded in empathy and action. The Menopause Friendly Accreditation is richly deserved.”
