A Cumbrian businessman has been named among the most influential figures in the North for the second year running.
Barry Leahey MBE, president of Playdale Playgrounds, has been included in BusinessCloud’s 2025 Northern Leaders list.
The prestigious list celebrates more than 200 inspirational individuals from across the North who are making the biggest positive difference to the region.
Figures featured span business, charity, sport, property, politics, philanthropy, and media – highlighting both household names and unsung heroes.
This year’s list introduces 74 new names who will be celebrated at the 2025 Northern Leaders Awards Dinner in Manchester next month.
Mr. Leahey joined Playdale Playgrounds in 2004 and has since helped transform the company into a market-leading playground manufacturer with a global footprint.
His influence extends far beyond his corporate role, as he actively works to shape and strengthen the North of England’s economic and social fabric.
As a key figure in regional strategy, he serves as a founding board member of the Cumbria Economic Growth Board and a member of the Northern Powerhouse Investment Fund Stakeholder Advisory Board.
He is Professor of Practice at the University of Cumbria, Honorary Professor at Lancaster University, and as a mentor to regional CEOs.
He champions the North as chair of the North West Forum for the National Productivity Institute and vice chair of Make UK North West, while also supporting charities including the NSPCC as a Business Advocate and Lancashire Teaching Hospitals Charity as a Children’s Appeal Patron.
Mr Leahey said: “It’s an honour to be named alongside so many incredible leaders who are driving change and making a positive impact across the North.
“At Playdale, we’ve always believed in creating opportunities, not only through our business but also through the wider community. To see that recognised in this way is truly humbling.”
