A manager of a Lake District Michelin starred restaurant has been named among the best in the UK.
Joel Pennington, of The Cottage in the Wood in Whinlatter, near Keswick, has been named as one of 10 finalists in the prestigious Gold Service Scholarship 2026.
The finalists will now compete in a practical assessment on January 19 at Kerridge’s Bar and Grill at the Corinthia London.
Following the final, all winning finalists will take part in an exclusive educational programme delivered by EHL Hospitality Business School in Lausanne, alongside access to a range of specialist workshops and placements.
The 2026 Gold Service Scholar will be announced at a ceremony at Claridge’s on February 9.
The overall winner will receive a tailored development plan, including placements in leading international restaurants such as Mandarin Oriental Bangkok and Hong Kong. Additional opportunities include working at a garden party or state banquet at Windsor Castle or Buckingham Palace, as well as benefiting from individual mentorship.
Joel said: “I’m beyond delighted to become a winning finalist in the Gold Service Scholarship. I was totally speechless when I heard the news, especially given the strength of the field in this year’s semi-final, with many candidates among the very best in the business.
“It has been an incredible opportunity to compete alongside like-minded professionals who share a genuine passion for hospitality. I’m especially excited for the finals as the only candidate representing the entire North of England.
“I’ve made amazing connections throughout the competition and would encourage anyone looking to develop their career to enter next year.

Launched in 2012, the Gold Service Scholarship aims to inspire and nurture the next generation of hospitality professionals in food and beverage service. Through mentoring, travel, and placement opportunities, the programme develops rising talent and helps shape the leaders of tomorrow.
Now in its 13th year, the Scholarship continues to champion the craft of service, recognising individuals who embody professionalism, warmth, and excellence in guest experience. Each year, it highlights outstanding talent and provides unique training and educational opportunities at the highest level.
