Cumbrian bakeries have been nominated for prestigious awards.

Lovingly Artisan and Ginger Bakers, based near Kendal, Bells of Lazonby have been shortlisted in this year’s Baking Industry Awards.

Amy North, editor of British Baker, said: “The Baking Industry Awards celebrate the people, products, and businesses that make the sector such an incredible one – from artisanal sourdough loaves and the bakers who handcraft them to the manufacturers helping to keep the nation happy and fed, and everyone in between.”

Lovingly Artisan has been nominated in the Craft Bakery Business of the Year category.

Co-owners Aidan Monks and Catherine Connor said: ‘’It’s a real honour to be shortlisted alongside the other finalists in this year’s BIAs.

“Now in their 38th year, the BIAs is without doubt the biggest event in the industry calendar and provides a magnificent platform to recognise the skills and achievements of the whole industry, and we can’t wait to join our fellow finalists to celebrate everyone’s achievements.’’

Bells of Lazonby’s We Love Cake Chocolate Orange Slices is a finalist in the Gluten-free

Made in dedicated bakery, the firm sells around 5,000 packs a week.

Ginger Bakers has been nominated in the Team of the Year category.

The firm, set up by Lisa Smith in 2006, employs 10 people and it also encourages volunteers with additional needs, like Down’s Syndrome and autism to work with the staff. Judges said they were charmed by the lack of perceived hierarchy, broadening of skills and a sense of unity.

Winners will be announced at a black tie event in London on October 23.
