Six new deputy lieutenants have been appointed to represent Cumbria.
Their appointment has been announced by Lord-Lieutenant Alexander Scott and have been made to recognise their contributions to the public service, community engagement, and the voluntary sector.
They will joining the Vice Lord-Lieutenant, Lord Inglewood, and 24 Deputy Lieutenants across the county, assisting the Lord-Lieutenant in representing the King and supporting civic life in Cumbria.
Deputy Lieutenants serve in a voluntary capacity and support the Lord-Lieutenant in civic, ceremonial, and community duties.
Deputy Lieutenants are appointed at the discretion of the Lord-Lieutenant, following approval from the Prime Minister. There is no application process.
Appointments are made based on geographic need and candidates’ significant contributions to public life, voluntary work, or community leadership.
The newly appointed Deputy Lieutenants are:
- Dr Julia Aglionby, of Carlisle
- Jacqueline Arnold MBE, of Barrow
- Mr Andrew Beeforth OBE, of Wigton
- Caz Graham, of Kendal
- Robert Morris-Eyton, of Millom
- Richard Ogden MBE, of Penrith
Dr Aglionby is executive director of the Foundation for Common Land and Professor of Practice in Protected Areas at the University of Cumbria
She was formerly an environmental economist in South East Asia and agricultural valuer in Cumbria and is a trustee of Susan’s Farm CIO and co-founder of View from the River. She has in the past stood for Parliament.
Mrs Arnold is a business and community leader. The chartered accountant has held senior roles in public and private sectors including BAE Systems and was the first female chair of the Cumberland Building Society. She was awarded MBE in 2016 for services to the local economy.
Mr Beeforth has been chief executive of Cumbria Community Foundation since 1999. He is the founding and current trustee of the National Emergencies Trust and was awarded OBE in 2010 for services to the voluntary sector.
Ms Graham is a BBC Radio 4 presenter and reporter. She is patron of Carer Support South Lakes and chair of Kendal Tennis Club.
Mr Morris-Eyton is a farmer, land agent, and managing director of Beckside Construction Ltd (hydroelectric projects). He is active in local agriculture and community initiatives.
Mr Ogden has had a career in public service and charitable work. He focuses on youth development, sustainability, and community resilience and actively supports multiple charities. He was awarded MBE in 2024 for services to charitable causes.
