Bringing builders together over breakfast

A monthly breakfast meet-up for builders, landscapers and tradespeople will launch in South Cumbria this month.

Third Thursday aims to offer something simple but increasingly rare in the industry – time to talk.

The initiative from Burlington Aggregates will run once a month and invites people working across construction, landscaping and related trades to start the day with a bacon sandwich, a mug of tea or coffee and a chat with others who understand the job.

The first event will take place next Thursday, March 19, at Goldmire Quarry, Thwaites Flat Road in Dalton-in-Furness.

Breakfast will be provided by a food van specially booked for the events.

Attendance is free, with no booking required.

Held from 8am to 9.30am so it fits around site schedules, the informal get-together is designed as a practical social space rather than a sales event.

There’s no agenda, no presentations and no pressure – just a chance to talk shop, swap tips, share experiences or simply catch up with people facing the same day-to-day challenges.

While the construction and landscaping sectors are known for their independence and self-reliance, many tradespeople spend long hours working alone, moving between sites with little opportunity for peer contact.

Third Thursday aims to provide a regular point of connection – a familiar face, a familiar place and a chance to offload or compare notes before the working day begins.

Chris Platt, head of business at Burlington Aggregates, said: “We know how solitary the work can be.

“This isn’t about formal networking or making a pitch. It’s about creating a space where people can talk openly, whether that’s about materials, weather, pricing pressures or just how the week’s going.”

The initiative has been deliberately kept low-key. Breakfast is simple, the format informal and attendance is open to builders, landscapers and related trades from across the area.

Regular attendees will also receive a Third Thursday trade card, acting as a light-touch way to recognise the community forming around the event.

The first Third Thursday breakfast event takes place from 8am to 9.30am on Thursday, March 19, at Goldmire Quarry, Thwaite Flat Road, LA14 4QB.

All related trades are welcome.
