Olympic champion Sir Bradley Wiggins will today lead Cumbria’s presence at a major investment conference underway in Yorkshire.

Britain’s first Tour de France winner is part of a ‘drop in’ lunch at the UK’s Real Estate Investment and Infrastructure Forum which will focus on showcasing key projects planned for Cumbria, not just the Tour de France.

Enterprising Cumbria and others say it’s an opportunity for investors, developers, occupiers and interested parties to meet the teams behind them.

Held annually, over 16,000 delegates including over 4,000 investors and developers  come together across three days to share insight, build long-term partnerships and drive innovation.

Innovation and AI along with a discussion about the role ports and energy can have in sparking coastal regeneration are among topics up for debate today.

“Barrow is one of the country’s best kept secrets,” Jeremy Ure of BAE Systems told delegates.

After a business breakfast the role of defence, seen as fundamental to Cumbria’s prosperity and a key component of the region’s economic strategy, will be discussed.

Among those taking part will be Lord Case, chair of the Team Barrow regeneration initiative.

He said: “The odd thing about Barrow is we have some of the best high wage, high skilled jobs but we don’t have the places for people to live.

“We have deep deprivation despite some of the most advanced technologies in the world. That’s unsustainable. It’s vital that the communities feel the benefit of investment.”
