A contractor is being sought to design and build one of a £10 million project which is part of the Millom Town Deal programme.

The Iron Line scheme will see the sea wall and coastal lagoon off the coast of Millom enhanced to form an inspirational and fully inclusive route across RSPB Hodbarrow with upwards of 7km of walking and cycling routes to be enhanced as part of the project.

A new welcome centre will be created, incorporating a café/bar, retail space and multi-use events room alongside adjacent parking for around 80 vehicles.

David Savage, chair of Millom Town Deal Board, said: “We are witnessing another big step forward with the Iron Line scheme as we encourage Contractors to get involved and deliver this exciting project.

“Momentum is building across all the Town Deal projects and we need to be mindful that each of the four projects will evolve at a different pace in line with its delivery schedule.

“Today, we are focussing on the Iron Line as we start to transform plans into positive change for our community.”

In addition to submitting information through Cumberland Council’s online procurement The Chest, contractors can also email the procurement team direct or send information in the post.

The deadline for responses is Monday 21 October 2024 at noon.

Millom Town Deal secured £20.6 million in November 2022 with an additional £8.7 million in match funding to help the town and its communities to thrive in the future.

Working with Cumberland Council, the external funding will be used to deliver four projects. Alongside The Iron Line, the Millom Town Deal includes Activating Community Health, Reactivating Heritage Buildings and Connecting Millom and Haverigg.

The project will deliver:

  • 300,000 of existing parks/greenspace/outdoor space improved.
  • 150,000 sqm of rehabilitated land.
  • 7.5km of improved or new walking and cycling paths.
  • One restored heritage building – Hodbarrow Beacon.
  • One new cultural facility – welcome building.
  • 80 new car parking spaces.
  • Six new art installations.
  • 120 trees planted.
  • Eight gross direct jobs created at the welcome building.
  • Up to 26 jobs supported during construction of the Ironline.
