From gaining early responsibility to learning while they earn, apprentices at a firm producing high specification electronic components have been talking about their experiences so far.

Oxley Group has recruited apprentices for both engineering and business skills at their Ulverston site. Recruits spend time at work as well as college where they gain nationally recognised qualifications.

Among those who have joined the company is Liam Tanton from Milnthorpe.

A business apprentice, he’s experienced work in HR and more recently in sales and marketing where he’s now been offered a long term role but will also be experiencing finance and project management.

“There’s always someone around to ask for help and I’ve really enjoyed working with customers all over the world,” Liam said.

His colleagues agree that the apprenticeship scheme is well worth considering – ‘you’re not just a number’, ‘there’s always something to learn,’ and ‘the variety – and four day week’ are among comments made by the apprentices to Kevin Warman, Local Skills Improvement Plan engagement manager for Cumbria Chamber of Commerce during a visit.

“It was great discussing how they are all getting on and how Oxley’s invest so much time in this programme,” Kevin said.

”Ensuring they always have a mentor and are teamed up with a buddy is great to hear and shows how seriously the scheme is taken. The apprentices told me how they are given responsibility early on but there is always help on hand should they need it.”
