The Borderway Black and White Sale at Carlisle which this year will be held on Saturday 1 December, has become a globally recognised and highly successful event within the dairy industry

This year is no exception and farmers from the North West are strongly represented in what is headlined as the best yet with an incredible line up of international genetics with consignments from all over the UK, USA, Germany, Ireland and the Netherlands.

Hosted by Harrison & Hetherington, this prestigious event, now in its 32nd year, is firmly established as a global opportunity to invest in the world’s leading genetics and this year has 111 animals being presented for sale. For the first time ever, this year’s sale features the National Champion, the National Calf Champion and the Intermediate Champion from UK Dairy Expo as well as the Italian National Champion. The Sale has highly sought-after genetics from all the major dairy breeds, and an exclusive opportunity to buy embryos, not offered to market anywhere in the world. One of the absolute highlights from the programme is the sale of the UK Dairy Expo 2018 National Champion Calf, consigned by Evening Holsteins, in Thursby near Carlisle. Born in August 2017, this heifer also won the Champion Calf Border & Lakeland Calf Show 2018 and will no doubt see fierce competition from buyers at the Sale. With an impressive GPLI+£555, this heifer is bred 11 generations of proven bull dams and is from the direct line of proven sire Shamrock.

For the first time in Holstein history a heifer sells from FIVE generations of cows that have produced over 100 ton of milk in their lifetime.  Denmire Upright Marie 498 is consigned by the renowned Dennison family from Ulverston. Born in February this year, this heifer is a maternal sister to Denmire Niagra Marie 216 VG87 who has produced over 50ton of milk in 4 lactations and will be much sought after for buyers looking for exceptional type combined with high production.

The final Cumbrian consignments come from M&R Harper, from Maryport, who will be there with three animals including Lillyhall Blooming Evelyn PI, from one of the best Brown Swiss families in the breed. This heifer, due to calve early January to Brown Haven R Famous (sexed) has an outstanding pedigree. For over 30 years this event has built on an incredible foundation, and with the support and enthusiasm of our consigners is now a leading sale in global dairy genetics.

“Cumbrian farmers have led the field in seeking the best dairy genetics and are recognised and highly respected in the pedigree world. We have some of the most progressive, innovative and successful dairy farmers in this area, and they are a credit to the industry and our region.

“This year’s sale gives investors the opportunity to purchase outstanding genetics from Cumbria which have a high demand from breeders across the globe and the quality to win at Europe’s biggest Shows.

Glyn added: “More and more people attending the event also value a chance to meet with like-minded, progressive and ambitious farmers, who look to improve the genetic index of their herds through investing in the world’s best.”
