Cumbrian firm Burlington Stone has been highly commended for its contribution to major construction projects.
The quarrying specialist was recognised at the Natural Stone Awards – its slate featured in winning construction projects, including the iconic Burlian Arch on Bond Street in the heart of London’s West End, which includes the quarry’s Broughton Green slate and the £1.2 billion Whiteley Development near Hyde Park, which features Kirkby Blue Grey slate.
Managing director Richard Page said: “Kirkby Blue Grey and Westmorland Green Slate are synonymous with the county and renowned for both their beauty and high flexural strength.
“To see two of our main slate types being recognised by the experts in the UK stone industry in this way shows how important Cumbrian slate is to UK construction.
“These major installations provide a permanent showcase for the hard work and skill of the Burlington craftsmen in the capital and on the world stage.”
It caps an award-winning year for the firm.
In July, it was a member of the team that won both a Silver Gilt Award and Best Construction Award at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show.
Broughton Moor Green, a Westmorland Green Slate, was used extensively in designer Catherine MacDonald’s award-winning Boodles Garden, which the judges praised for its depiction of art in nature.
and last month, it was runner-up in the coveted Sir Frank Davies Trophy that recognises health and safety performance.
