An apprentice working for BAE Systems in Barrow has been named Shipyard Apprentice of the Year.
Alice Steen, a recent Nuclear Engineering Graduate, was awarded the The Worshipful Company of Shipwrights King’s Silver Medal after taking part in a week-long Phipps Leadership and Development programme.
She progressed to a final interview stage in London where the 25-year-old was selected as the winner.
The award dates back to 1944 when King George VI, the Permanent Master of the Shipwrights’ Company, began a tradition of awarding a Silver Medal to the Shipyard Apprentice of the Year.
In 1978 a Bronze Medal was added for the runner-up apprentice with another Bronze Medal for the best craftsman added in 1998 in memory of the Derek Kimber OBE, Prime Warden, and a noted shipbuilder with a particular interest in apprentice training.
Alice, now a Principal Nuclear Operations Engineer at the shipyard in Barrow, said: “I have learnt so much about myself and the shipbuilding industry and being the overall winner has felt like a full circle moment after completing my Nuclear Degree Apprenticeship scheme last year.”
BAE Systems are currently recruiting over 800 apprentices and graduates to work in Barrow.
