Armstrong Watson is proud to mark National Apprenticeship Week 2025 by celebrating the success of its trainees and the considerable difference they make to the business.
For the past three years, the accountancy, business and financial advisory firm has been recognised by the Department of Education for having one of the best and most successful apprenticeship programmes in the country.
The firm ranked at number 37 in the UK Top 100 Apprenticeship Employers last year, up from 46 in 2023 and 64 in 2022.
With more 140 apprentices currently studying a variety of courses at different levels, Armstrong Watson is committed to nurturing the next generation of talent.#
Among these apprentices, 58 are working towards their AAT or ATT qualifications, while 74 are pursuing their level 7 Chartered qualifications, which are equivalent to a master’s degree. Each apprentice plays a valuable role in the business and has the prospect of a successful and rewarding career ahead.
Fern Varah, 18, of Carlisle, decided to go down the apprenticeship route after gaining her A-levels at Trinity School. She is now in the first year of her AAT qualification.
“I always wanted to do an apprenticeship rather than go to university, as doing an apprenticeship means you will receive the qualifications like you would if you went to university, however you also gain valuable on the job experience,” she said.
“Since starting my apprenticeship in September 2024, everyone has made me feel welcome and included.
“I receive amazing support and training from colleagues which makes me feel confident when completing tasks. There are lots of social events like the Christmas party and summer social, which is an excellent opportunity to get to know colleagues outside of a work environment.”

As part of its ongoing commitment to developing talent, Armstrong Watson is recruiting for its next intake of trainees. The firm is offering 25 AAT and five ATT positions across its office in the North of England and Scotland with applications open until Wednesday, March 5 2025.
It is also soon to welcome applications for a payroll administrator apprentice in Newcastle.
In addition, the business is looking for 40 graduates to join their graduate trainee scheme to become chartered accountants or chartered tax advisers, with applications closing 25 April 2025.
