International experts in robotics, remote technologies, and AI gathered in West Cumbria to showcase innovative methods to make nuclear clean-up safer and more efficient.
The Nuclear Energy Agency and Sellafield Ltd co-hosted workshop at Energus at Lillyhall, near Workington.
Delegates shared their insight on the opportunities, benefits, and challenges of harnessing robotics and advanced technologies in nuclear decommissioning work.
Robin Ibbotson, Sellafield Ltd chief technology officer, said: “Throughout our history, Sellafield has been a leader in nuclear innovation.
“I’m hugely proud of the work delivered. From our new IT solutions in AI, to our pragmatic approach on our major projects, and our recent world firsts on robotics in remediation and engineering.”
Claire Cleaver-Jones, Sellafield Ltd business manager for robotics and artificial intelligence, hosted a visit to Sellafield for NEA representatives as part of the event.
She said: “NEA brings together countries dedicated to sharing state of the art knowledge in the field of nuclear energy.
“It’s important we continue to learn and share best practice on robotics to achieve our mission in a quicker and safer way.”
Melanie Brownridge, chief research and development officer at the NDA, said: “Events like this provide a platform to bring together leading experts.
“They help foster collaboration and knowledge sharing while showcasing the world-class work at Sellafield and across the rest of the NDA group.”
