[T]he Gaddum Restaurant, named after Brockhole’s former Victorian owner, William Gaddum, opened only a short three months ago on a spring evening in late April. Since then The Gaddum has gained an enviable reputation and some dedicated fans. It now extends its service and adds early evening dining to the menu.
Ian Jones, Food Critic, Creative Tourist said: “For such a new venture, The Gaddum Restaurant has its sense of self nailed down: classic British cooking, with a modern high-end twist, in a laid-back beautiful location…and for bonus British points, there’s even a tea sommelier.”
Jo Cooksey from Taste Today was more than happy to travel from Manchester just to sample lunch, said: “I chose the Cumbrian Shorthorn Beef and Cracked Wheat Salad with a Garlic & Chive Flower Puree. Oh, my lord, the beef was simply amazing, I quizzed the head chef, Gerald, who was happy to share his method. The result is like nothing I have never eaten before, both in terms of flavour and texture… Gerald has brought all his haute cuisine and fine dining experience to bear but with a relaxed feel and at prices that won’t break the bank.” Gerald van der Walt joined The Gaddum from Rogan & Co, L’Enclume.
Rachael Oakden Editor, Taste Magazine spotted The Gaddum’s pastry chef Zoe McCaig’s talents at the opening evening and was keen to return. Rachael said: “The eyes close; a few seconds’ pause; then comes the blissed-out sigh… we fall one by one into enchanted silence. Zoe has created afternoon teas that look as stunning as the Windermere views framed by the Arts and Crafts windows.”
Sam Mason, General Manager of Brockhole said: “We were always confident that The Gaddum restaurant would become a favourite for food lovers and Brockhole visitors alike, the feedback and reviews we have been receiving have delighted everyone here. Extending our opening time over late summer and early autumn means guests can now enjoy the spectacular views from Brockhole’s terrace as the sun sets over Windermere. I’d like to stress that dining here supports here – that all of the profits go straight back into the wonderful landscape of lakes, fells and mountains of England’s largest National Park which is now a World Heritage Site.”
Michael Vanheste, The Gaddum Catering Manager said: “The Gaddum’s menus are designed to reflect the beautiful surroundings of the restaurant and the incredible landscape in which we sit. We use the finest British ingredients, cooked with skill and experience, and presented without pretension, but still with a touch of style. Evening diners will have a choice of our signature lunch menu plus some additional specials inspired by the season.”
The Gaddum is now taking bookings for early evening sunset dining as well as lunch and afternoon tea. Evening service commences at 5pm with last orders taken at 7pm. The lounge bar and terrace are open until 9pm. Parking is free when guests spend over £20.
