Back in April, 13-year-old Tom Booth from Keswick School was announced the winner of Lake District Hotels Ltd, ‘Design a Sandwich’ competition. The competition was part of Lake District Hotels on-going fundraising activities to upgrade the food technology facilities at Keswick School; the hotel groups charity of the year.
Tom came up with a cleverly concocted sandwich ‘Stinky Pig’ of hot back bacon, Eden valley brie and mango chutney, served on a warm ciabatta with a side salad of rocket, celery and chopped radish with a balsamic vinegar dressing. The sandwich went on sale across the seven Lake District Hotels (Lodore Falls Hotel & Spa and Borrowdale Hotel in the Borrowdale valley; the Skiddaw Hotel, the Kings Arms Hotel and the Inn on the Square in Keswick; the George Hotel in Penrith and Inn on the Lake in Ullswater) from April to October 2018, with 50p from each sale going towards Keswick School.
An impressive 1,688 sandwiches have been sold across the group, raising a grand total of £844 which will go towards implementing a brand-new food technology kitchen within the school, making it more effective and engaging for the students with the aim of encouraging them to learn how to cook and possibly take up careers within the hospitality industry.
Dani Hope, Marketing Director for Lake District Hotels Ltd commented “The ‘Stinky Pig’ sandwich went down a treat across our hotels, especially at the Inn on the Lake where they sold 782 sandwiches. It was great to see our customers enjoying Tom’s creation, and to see it bring in over £800 for the school. We have more exciting fundraising events in the pipe line, next year we have a Wild West Charity Night taking place, as well as our glamourous Royal Ascot Ladies Race Day which is our annual event, both of these are in aid of Keswick School and will take place at the Lodore Falls Hotel & Spa.”
