Windermere based photographer Andrew Jones captured a winning image of Derwent Water just after dawn earlier this year, the stunning picture which shows a cloud inversion around Derwent Isle reflected in the mirror flat water below was awarded a Judges Choice Commendation in the Take a View Landscape Photographer of the Year 2018 (LPOTY) competition.
Andrew’s image, selected from many thousands of entries, will not only be featured in Collection 12 of the LPOTY book but will also be showcased in an exhibition in London Waterloo Station from the 19th November 2018 until 3rd February 2019. The exhibition, as in previous years, will then travel around other major railways stations in the UK.
Andrew Jones said: “It was a lovely surprise just to have been shortlisted from thousands of entries earlier in the summer, but to have an image commended and awarded a judges choice at only my second time of entering is a dream come true.
“Being featured amongst so many other wonderful images is a real boost to my confidence and justification for some of the early starts! I got into photography so I could do justice to the views from the fells, The Lake District is a magical place and being able to capture a moment of it that others appreciate too feels very special.
“I started photographing seriously following classes at the Brewery Arts Centre with Colin Reynolds. The classes were a real catalyst for my work. My winning picture was taken during one of my 4am sessions. It was a stunning morning and an inversion took hold of Derwent Water and Keswick, isolating the Isle from the usually imposing Catbells.
“The sun broke through at just the right time and brought out the colour in the leaves, whilst the mist and calm conditions created a lovely reflection. I was in the right place at the right time.”
Andrew Jones’ Cumbrian image is one of four pictures of Cumbria to feature highly in the awards. Others include creative takes on Honister Slate Mine, Buttermere and Holme Fell.
