Expanding critical technical skills and leadership in Cumbria
Jacobs team left to right: Ray Riley, Caitlin Johnson, Jacobs Chair and CEO Steve Demetriou, Pete Lutwyche, Peter McRoberts and George MacIver.

Jacobs is expanding its presence in Cumbria with a £460,000 investment in its Barrow office. Secured under a lease until 2028, the office will accommodate 40 employees covering sustainability, ports and maritime, asset refurbishment, renewal and management, and environmental and geotechnical engineering, resulting in collaborative teams helping clients manage highly complex projects that enhance site capability and help maintain the U.K.’s national security.

As a long-term strategic location in Barrow, the expansion supports continued growth of Jacobs’ local service provision next to core clients and also provides greater opportunities for skills development for employees and new recruits, including graduates and apprentices. With more than 250 employees across Cumbria, 90% of which are based in the county, Jacobs is developing a centre of technical expertise in Cumbria to support key projects both locally and nationally.

“Expanding our operations in Barrow enables us to work adjacent to the major programmes we’re supporting and find better ways to help address priorities around sustainability, resiliency and security,” said Jacobs Aerospace, Technology and Nuclear International Senior Vice President and General Manager Pete Lutwyche. “We are helping to develop a lasting, internationally competitive skills base here, with opportunities for innovation and collaboration to support sustainable, inclusive growth in Barrow.”

With a 12-year business heritage in Barrow that it continues to grow and invest in today, Jacobs has supported the defence sector for more than 70 years, providing design and project delivery services for some of the most significant BAE Systems programmes, including Devonshire Dock Hall Recladding, Devonshire Dock Quay, and also ongoing technical support to several areas within BAE Systems.

Employees in Jacobs’ Barrow office work on local and global projects with graduates and apprentices currently training on industry leading development programmes. The company also has a network of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Ambassadors and other employees who are highly active within local communities, participating in STEM initiatives at local schools and employing their skills and experience in school governance.

Jacobs leads the global professional services sector providing solutions for a more connected, sustainable world. With approximately $12 billion in revenue and a talent force of more than 50,000, Jacobs provides a full spectrum of services including scientific, technical, professional and construction- and program-management for business, industrial, commercial, government and infrastructure sectors.
