Cargoes of nuclear fuel have been delivered from Barrow to Japan by a Cumbrian-based company.

Two purpose-built ships from Nuclear Transport Solutions delivered 16 Mox fuel assemblies to the Takahama Nuclear Power Station today.

The vessels, whose home port is Ramsden Dock, Barrow-in-Furness, departed from Europe on September 17 carrying the fuel assemblies, which were made in France.

Pacific Nuclear Transport Ltd, which is operated by Nuclear Transport Solutions, has been transporting nuclear materials between Europe and Japan for more than 45 years and has a flawless nuclear safety and security record.

The fuel is transported in purpose-built vessels that are state-of-the-art and are manned by some of the most experienced nuclear mariners in the world.

MOX fuel contains a mix of mainly uranium, with a small proportion of plutonium, and effectively makes possible a new energy resource, derived from nuclear fuel that has already been used in a reactor.

Seth Kybird, CEO of NTS, said: “The successful completion of another shipment of Mox fuel to Japan demonstrates again the ability of PNTL and NTS to transport nuclear cargos safely and securely around the world.

“I would like to thank our PNTL crew members, transport partners and customers for their hard work and co-operation in making this shipment such a success.”
