A West Cumbrian engineering firm has been honoured for its commitment to developing the next generation.
CEO Anand Puthran and COO Shiby Bernard of McMenon Engineering, based in Workington, were invited to the Local Skills Champions’ Reception at 10 Downing Street by Workington MP Mark Jenkinson.
More than 100 people attended the reception, hosted by Education Secretary Gillian Keegan, after they were chosen from hundreds of nominations.
Anand said: “Being part of this event was truly fantastic and underscores McMenon’s unwavering commitment to apprenticeships and education in our region.
“Thanks to Mark Jenkinson for inviting us to this prestigious event. We were honoured to take part in discussions that are shaping the future of the next generation – a cause we are incredibly passionate about at McMenon.”
Mr Jenkinson added: “I was delighted to welcome Anand and Shiby to No 10 to recognise them and McMenon Engineering as local skills champions.
“It was a great opportunity to celebrate the work they’re doing to encourage skill development through employing local apprentices and workplace support.”
McMenon said it was committed to leaving a lasting legacy in the local community. The company has just held two Girls in Engineering Days for students from West Cumbrian Sixth Forms. This initiative aims to encourage more females to enter the engineering field, breaking down barriers and fostering equal opportunities.
McMenon also engages with local schools and colleges, working to inspire and encourage young students and supports community organisations and local youth sports teams.
There are currently 10 apprentices based at the Workington factory, across a range of disciplines.
