Talks are underway regarding the sale of Carlisle Lake District Airport.
Owners Esken Group revealed in its half-year report that it intended to complete the sale before the end of the firm’s financial year, which is at the end of next month.
The aviation and renewables group also owns a logistics centre in Widnes and London Southend Airport.
David Shearer, executive director of Esken said: “Discussions are underway on the remaining non-core assets at Widnes and Carlisle Lake District Airport, with a view to completing transactions to dispose of these assets before the end of our financial year.
“These transactions will not only generate cash to improve the groups’ liquidity profile and support the wind down of group services, but also remove long-term lease liabilities from the balance sheet and allow a focus to be on the growth and sale of London Southend Airport.
“It is the intention of the board that once these transactions have been completed the residual value will be returned to shareholders.”
The Carlisle Lake District Airport site, near Brampton, has been closed since 2020, when plans to launch regular commercial flight services carried by Logan Air to Dublin and London Southend fell through.
In 2022 Esken said they intended to relaunch a commercial service from Carlisle as soon as possible following the Covid pandemic.
However, in June 2023, the group announced that financial concerns meant that they had to sell off non-core assets to support their other operations.
Despite the withdrawal of a licence for commercial flights, the airport site continues to be an aerodrome for general and military aviation use, and also hosts a local flying school for private lessons.
In 2023, the group reported a loss of £3.5 million, a slight improvement on the £4.1 million loss reported in 2022.
The Carlisle Lake District Airport site is thought to be valued at around £15 million.
