Every Life Matters, a Cumbrian suicide prevention and bereavement charity and one of the leading training providers in the county are using this year’s Mental Health Awareness week to increase understanding about the importance of introducing Mental Health First Aiders (MHFAiders) to the workplace.
Nina Porter, training and business co-ordinator at Every Life Matters says: “The numbers are really telling. Mental health research from Deloitte is showing that the cost to employers of poor mental health has increased, to up to £56 billion in 2020-21 compared to £45 billion in 2019 but on the other hand businesses can see a return of up to £5.30 for every £1 invested in staff wellbeing. It’s a no-brainer, by investing in staff mental health you also invest in your organisation.”
According to MHFA England around 51% of long-term sick leave is due to stress, depression, or anxiety and a recent report found that almost half of UK workers are running on empty, with burnout and work-related mental ill health.
As we navigate the challenges brought about by the pandemic, prioritising mental health has become more crucial than ever. Introducing Mental Health First Aiders into the workplace can significantly enhance employee wellbeing.
A happier, more engaged workforce translates to better productivity and overall satisfaction. When employees feel supported, they perform at their best, contributing to a positive work atmosphere. By having MHFAiders available, you create a safety net for employees facing emotional distress.
Early intervention can prevent prolonged absences and help individuals get back on track sooner. Having Mental Health First Aiders in your organisation is a statement that you take mental health and the wellbeing of your employees and your colleagues seriously.
MHFAiders contribute to creating a positive workplace culture. By reducing stigma around mental health, they encourage open conversations. When colleagues know they can seek help without judgment, they feel valued and supported, which then reduces turnover rates.
The goal should be to create mentally healthy workplaces for all. MHFA England training is proven to make a lasting difference in a learner’s knowledge and confidence to provide mental health support, with 91% of people agreeing they found an increased understanding of mental health following their course.
Training as an accredited Mental Health First Aider takes two full days and you receive three years of certification, plus access to ongoing benefits from it. This course is ideal for businesses to help staff gain the knowledge and skills to spot signs of people experiencing poor mental health, be confident to start a conversation and signpost a person to appropriate support.
Nina Porter said: “Employers have a duty of care to their people that includes protecting and promoting their mental health and wellbeing. Mental Health Awareness Week is the perfect time to think about Mental Health First Aid Training for your company or organisation.
“It’s not only a smart move but also a compassionate one. As an instructor member of MHFA England, we offer accredited training online and face-to-face in Cumbria. I would encourage businesses to get in touch with us to make the next step.
