Firms in Kendal which have been impacted by the creation of the town’s flood risk management scheme will receive compensation if they can show loss of earnings.
The Environment Agency is reminding business if they suffer a demonstrable financial loss as a direct consequence of the scheme then they are able to submit a claim for compensation.
To help businesses, the Environment Agency has a business resilience guide available on line, with specific commercial information about how to be resilient, prepared for flooding and apply for compensation where they are experiencing a direct loss of earnings due to the construction of the flood defences and can demonstrate the losses through their accounts.
The Business Resilience Guide is available online, via the Kendal Flood Hub.
When completed, the flood risk management scheme will better protect 1,150 local businesses in the town, which employ 6,105 people and 1,480 homes, the agency said.
The flood protection will save £725 million from future flood damage and represents a £277 million benefit to the local economy.
A spokesman for the Environment Agency said: “Kendal Flood Scheme is a major engineering project involving extensive construction work that requires road and path closures at times to ensure public safety.
“Once the scheme is completed it will provide better protection to more than 1,100 local businesses and 1,400 homes.
“We are doing everything possible to keep disruption to a minimum and are offering compensation where businesses can show their loss of earnings, directly impacted by our work.
