A man who has been an integral part of Cumbria’s business landscape has announced his retirement.
Mark Hurley has been an associate of Harrison Network since 2017 and has been a major influence across the county.
Lucy Harrison, MD of Harrison Network, said: “In that time, he’s made a huge positive impact, not only with our clients, their teams and businesses, but also with all of us at Harrison Network and in his other roles too. His retirement will be felt across Cumbria and beyond.”
During a career of over 50 years, Mark has worked in publishing and distribution, engineering and the charitable sector, before creating Mark Hurley Consulting Ltd in 2013.
His special talent has always been working with people, managers and their teams, to motivate and integrate them, all with a focus on dealing with change, creating growth and improving performance.
As an associate with Harrison Network, Mark has been instrumental in helping grow its business and strengthen the team as well as building external relationships across the nuclear, energy and civil engineering sectors.
Lucy added: “Always upbeat, always positive, always asking challenging questions, Mark has been a wonderful presence for us as a team and he’s made a big impact in the region too.
“He is someone who genuinely cares about people. At the same time, he’s not scared to ask difficult questions – but always from a position of care, not to manipulate anyone or make himself look clever but from a genuine passion for people and a dedication to building their confidence and performance.”
“Beyond Harrison Network, he’s built a reputation as Dianne Richardson’s ‘voice’ at Britain’s Energy Coast Business Cluster, getting people to move beyond networking and into the main room, working together and winning business together. He’ll be much missed.”
As well as his work with some of Cumbria’s largest employers, Mark has also dedicated considerable time and talent to the county’s young people. Until recently he was chair of trustees of Cumbria Youth Alliance after serving as a trustee for several years.
Becky Wolstenholme is the Alliance’s current CEO. She said: “Mark’s dedication and commitment in his role as chair of trustees have been nothing short of inspiring.
“His kindness and willingness to devote significant time and effort to ensure that the young people of Cumbria receive the services and support they deserve are truly commendable.
“When I joined Cumbria Youth Alliance almost four years ago, Mark was there to guide and support me. He challenged me but always gave me the confidence to aim higher for the benefit of all our young people in Cumbria.
“His business acumen and his calm and thoughtful approach to difficult situations meant that together, along with the whole staff team and trustees, we have been on a remarkable transformation.”

Mark is not one to put his feet up and, even in retirement, he is still keen to use his experience and skills with organisations from a voluntary perspective.
