Commuters hoping to use the Windermere ferry have been urged to make alternative arrangements as repair work following a fault continues. No date has been set for the reintroduction of the service which was suspended last week.
In a statement, Westmorland and Furness Council said:
“Our investigations into the mechanical fault confirmed that a nut holding the drive wheel in place has loosened, requiring us to suspend service for the safety of our passengers and crew.
This week we will be conducting a weather-dependent and specialist operation to retrieve the drive wheel from the lakebed, with the aim of refitting it later this week. The manufacturing of a new bespoke nut is also now complete and delivery is being arranged.
We are working hard to complete this essential work so that the ferry service can resume at the earliest opportunity. We will continue to keep you updated via this bulletin and on our Windermere Ferry Facebook page.”
