A film produced to showcase the Sandscale Haws national nature reserve has been released on YouTube with the man behind set for another busy year behind the lens.

Kendal-based filmmaker Dom Bush was commissioned by the National Trust to create Sandscale Haws – A Home on the Sand, which was shown at the Kendal Mountain Festival.

The reserve is home to internationally significant wildlife, including some of the rarest and most protected species in the UK.

Natterjack toads are just one of these increasingly threatened species; one quarter of the national population of this rare species make their home here.

Migratory bird populations of international importance can be seen there including Pintail, Red Knot and Common Redshank.

2024 was a successful year for Dom who had six of his films included in the Kendal Mountain Festival, one of the most prestigious events in the world.

Meanwhile 2025 is already shaping up to be another busy year with confirmed projects include working with farmer Richard Maxwell in Ennerdale on a documentary about pioneering nature regeneration in the valley.

“Following on from the film I co-directed with John Porter – Everest Revisited 1921-1924 – which has had worldwide festival screenings and is currently available to view at Rheged as part of an exhibition, John and I will be making another film about the first ascent of Kanchenjunga, the third highest mountain in the world, by an all British expedition team in 1955,” Dom told Business Crack.

The film-maker will also be working in Morocco this spring making a documentary about how climate change is affecting the essential oils industry there.

Another film premiered at the Kendal festival will also be released in 2025.

Finding Freedom – Stories from Refugees Rock follows a group of refugees based in Liverpool on their first trip climbing in Wales.

The group are part of a climbing club called Refugees Rock, set up by The Climbing Hangar, Action Asylum and British Red Cross.
