Sellafield has urged all employees and contractors who can work from home today to stay away from the site as Storm Eowyn batters Cumbria.
Only employees and contractors involved in front line operations and maintenance activities are being allowed on site.
Management also advised that employees and contractors planning to travel into Cumbria from outside the county not to do so.
Meanwhile all Sellafield apprentices based at off-site locations, including Energus, Gen2 and Lakes College, are being advised to work from home.
Gen2 training centres across Cumbria are closed today and are expected to reopen on Monday.
Management of Bendrigg Trust near Kendal have closed the charity’s office today although staff are contactable by email.
The University of Cumbria campuses are open as usual.
Windermere ferry has been suspended due to the weather.
At 8.50am this morning 40% of the UK’s energy needs were being generated by wind power according to Energy Dashboard.
The Met Office station at St Bees Head has recorded pressure slowly rising as the storm passes over.
Webcams around the county show a bright and mainly dry start to the day.
On Windermere the Lake Cruises webcam shows white horses at Bowness Bay (see below.)
On Ullswater, the steamer’s webcam shows waves are heading straight towards the jetty at Pooley Bridge.
With the tide heading out Morecambe’s webcam shows little threat from the Bay today.
The RSPB reserve at Leighton Moss has also closed until the storm passes.
