A heavy engineering company which makes and maintains steel making equipment is keeping a close eye on government efforts to secure the future of the UK’s steel industry.
The work of Chapel Bank Engineering in Workington was highlighted by the area’s MP Josh MacAlister at the weekend after politicians voted to take control of British Steel’s plant at Scunthorpe.
MPs were recalled to Parliament on Saturday from their Easter break and voted to pass an emergency law which handed control of the Chinese-owned site to the Government to keep its two blast furnaces operating.
Workington Engineering, trading as Chapel Bank Engineering, is described as ‘a total solution high performance engineering provider’ and last year became part of the heavy engineering group, GMET Technical Services.
“150 jobs at Chapel Bank would be at risk if British Steel went under,” the Whitehaven and Workington MP wrote on his Facebook account following the vote on Saturday.
“The action taken by the Government will protect those jobs. And we could create even more jobs here in Workington if we ensure the next generation of steel making equipment is also made here in Britain.”
