Less than a year since the final film was projected onto the screen, the Royalty Cinema in Bowness is set to reopen with new operators aiming to ensure the venue will appeal to all.
Rising prices were blamed for the venue closing last August ending an association with the town going back to 1922.
Now the cinema is being developed as a venue capable of hosting a variety of events, not just cinema.
“We’re introducing alternatives to the cinema which will still be part of the Royalty but will be bringing in live music, comedy, theatre and obviously keeping the Wurlitzer organ which is undergoing a revamp,” Mark Naunton from the team redeveloping the venue said.
The main screen will remain but seats will be removable meaning the venue can offer standard or cabaret type events in addition to fully standing for concerts.
An opening event is scheduled for June 14 when a band, The Upbeat Beatles, will take to the stage marking a remarkable turnaround for the business.
“We’re keen to collaborate with local businesses to be able to provide a top quality venue for Bowness,” Mark said. “With millions of tourists visiting every year the Royalty will hopefully be a welcome addition to the area.”
A premises licence means alcohol can be served while a kiosk will be providing ice cream. A small private hire venue to be known as The Studio will also be available
Westmorland and Furness Council has supported the installation of an air source heat pump along with solar panels.
With a capacity of around 470, it is hoped the venue will be a welcome addition to live music venues on offer across Cumbria.
