Candidates to fill a high profile role within Team Barrow are being urged to apply for a job which aims to leave a ‘legacy that will last for generations to come’.
The programme director will lead and manage the Team Barrow project management office.
Team Barrow is the multi-million-pound, part public part privately funded regeneration collaboration between Westmorland and Furness Council, BAE Systems and central government.
The role, with a starting salary of £82,000, will report to the Barrow Delivery Board which ‘is responsible for facilitating and enabling the delivery of an ambitious investment programme from funds provided by central government which include the £200m Barrow Transformation Fund.’
A specialist HR team within North Yorkshire Council is leading recruitment for the role.
It’s understood the role has been created after a reorganisation of the project launched last year which will see Phil Drane, who Business Crack interviewed earlier this year, move to oversee responsibility of the Heart of Barrow Transformation Project.
Work to regenerate the town centre including the market hall and Forum 28 is progressing with Westmorland and Furness Council last week issuing an Invitation to tender to specialist demolition contractors.
BAE Systems has plans to significantly grow its workforce to enable delivery of the Astute, Dreadnought and SSN-AUKUS submarine programmes. Already more than 14,500 people are employed on the projects.
Team Barrow’s aims are to support further recruitment and diversify and strengthen Barrow’s economy and increase productivity.
A spokesperson for Westmorland and Furness Council said: “This is a very exciting time for Barrow.
“An ambitious 10-year plan has been agreed with two key, underlying outcomes of enabling and sustaining the nuclear defence industry in Barrow and diversifying and strengthening the area’s economy and increasing productivity. Delivery of these outcomes is being backed by a significant investment programme provided by central government, which includes the £200m Barrow Transformation Fund.
“To take forward the progress that has already been made we are looking for an ambitious Programme Director with experience in regeneration, inclusive growth and programme management.
“The successful candidate will have a unique opportunity to work with central government, BAE Systems, the council and other stakeholders to make the area a recognised centre, not only for the defence and manufacturing industry, but also for education, housing, sport, arts, transport, tourism and healthcare.”
The chief executive of Team Barrow is former BAE Systems executive Peter Anstiss.
Jim Perks, who was BAE Systems Submarines’ head of future workforce strategy until last month and prior to this commodore of the Royal Navy’s Submarine Service, has also joined the team as operations director.
