Amentum has opened a new West Cumbrian facility.
The advanced engineering firm said it had invested over £300,000 in the new base at Ullcoats, near Egremont.
It has over 2,000sq m of space and comprises of three units including a rig hall, conference and training rooms, a fabrication facility and engineering office space.
The Ullcoats facility will be used for testing and trialling, providing space for commissioning training, NVQ assessments, and development of blue and white collar apprentices by enabling them to spend time working alongside qualified tradespeople to get them ready to be effectively deployed on site.
Mark Ritchie, Amentum’s waste & technology director, started his nuclear industry career with a different company in one of the buildings in 1999.
He said: “When we took the lease on, it looked like the same carpet was still down from when I started.
“Over the past six months, we have put in a lot of investment, effort and pride to give the property a new lease of life.
“Small, local businesses have done most of the work so our investment has directly benefitted the West Cumbrian economy.”
The dedicated fabrication facility will be available to all parts of the Amentum business.
Mark added: “Refurbishing these units is actually very cost-effective.
“New build costs are astronomical, so bringing unused properties back to life with a bit of investment and vision is the right thing to do. It supports the local economy and really makes a difference.”
The Ullcoats facility will complement Amentum’s existing Engineering & Technology Centre on the nearby Beckermet Industrial Estate, it said.
