A multi-million-pound project to prepare land at the Port of Workington for future development is underway.
In March 2021, as part of the Government’s budget, Workington successfully bid for £23 million from the Towns Fund.
Last year, a development brief was prepared to encourage more trade at the port which is seen as a key asset for the town and has the potential for expansion and growth.
Now 20 hectares of brownfield land on the Oldside site and former tank farms is being remediated to prepare it for use by new tenants.
The work is being carried out by Thomas Armstrong Construction and will include the dismantling and demolition of redundant buildings and infrastructure, including the draining, cleaning, and dismantling of large storage tanks.
Hazardous materials and redundant services will be removed before the site is backfilled and compacted ready for development.
“As a key landowner Cumberland Council will develop serviced land around the Port and at Oldside allowing it to become a key location for the logistics and clean energy sector within west Cumbria,” Ben Meil, Workington Port Manager told Business Crack.
“It’s great to see the contract for the work awarded locally and we’re looking forward to it becoming ready for future use from May.”
